The Lamb Family have Farmed in Manchester for over 150 yrs. We know a thing or two about sustainability, taking care of the environment we live in, and being good stewards of our land; we’ve been doing it for generations.
Currently MapleWinds farm is owned and operated by 3 generations. Bill bought this farm in 1963, Ken came home for good in 1996, and Kevin came home to farm in 2016.
Much of the Farm’s life included cattle and pigs, but sheep have been the main livestock since 2010.
The Farm itself is run as close to nature as we can. The majority of the feed that goes into our sheep is grown on our own farm. Any additional is purchased from neighbours and relatives. Then there is that wonderful smelling by-product of raising lambs that makes such good organic fertilizer! Our Manure is utillized fully by the crops we grow, vastly reducing the need for additional fertilizers. Combine that with a good crop rotation to help reduce pests and weeds, and the closeness to nature continues.
We market our lambs through Trillium Lamb Inc, of which we are a founding member. Creating strength through colaboration between farmers, processors and retailers has enabled a steady dependable market for all those involved. We also supply our good neighbour’s Willowtree Farm whenever they don’t have enough of their own for their farm store.
In the end, it simply comes down to caring about what you do. When you eat, sleep, work, live and breathe farming, you take the time to make sure that you’re doing things right.
